NEW YORK, Sept. 13 (UPI) -- Lady Gaga, covered in fake blood, played dead during a performance of her song "Paparazzi" at the MTV Video Music Awards show in New York.

The recording artist, who went into Sunday night's event with nominations for nine prizes, wore a white costume with fake blood oozing down the front as she sang her hit song.

As the tune wound down, backup dancers lifted her up and she was seen dangling from a line, as if she were dead while flashes went off and clicking, as if from cameras, was heard.

The singer later won the award for best new artist.

She returned to the stage wearing a red crown on her head, as well as a red lace dress, cape and face covering.

"It's my first (expletive) moon man. I just want to say a big thank you to my family," she declared, handing her trophy off to presenter Eminem as she took the covering off her face. "I love you guys! This is for my (expletive) fans. You're the best fans in the whole world and I love you."
