LOS ANGELES, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- Hollywood screen icon Gary Cooper is to be commemorated on a stamp, the U.S. Postal Service said Friday.
A stamp dedication ceremony is to take place next Thursday at the Autry National Center of the American West in Los Angeles.
"(Film critic and historian) Leonard Maltin will emcee the event that includes a special film tribute to Gary Cooper. Cooper's daughter will speak about the iconic actor as a father and be available for interviews on his 20-year friendship with Ernest Hemingway," the Postal Service said. "The two outdoorsmen often hunted and fished together. Hemingway had Cooper in mind when writing 'For Whom the Bell Tolls.' American Indian Sonya Oberly will highlight Cooper's contributions to Native Americans."
Cooper's films include "High Noon," "The Pride of the Yankees," "Sergeant York" and "Along Came Jones."
He died of cancer in 1961 at the age of 60.
