LONDON, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- Noel Gallagher says he has quit Oasis, the British rock band he helped create in 1991 with his brother Liam.

Rolling Stone said the group scrapped a gig at a French music festival Friday night after the long-bickering siblings had a huge fight backstage.

"The group no longer exists," an announcer, citing media reports, told the audience before Oasis was to take the stage Friday. "They will not play tonight and they are canceling the rest of their European tour."

"It's with some sadness and great relief to tell you that I quit Oasis tonight," Rolling Stone quoted Noel Gallagher as saying in a post on his MySpace page. "People will write and say what they like, but I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer. Apologies to all the people who bought tickets for the shows in Paris, Konstanz and Milan."
