LOS ANGELES, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- Negotiations between "American Idol" producers and former judge Paula Abdul have broken down, a source told the New York Post.

Both parties recently announced Abdul would not be returning to the singing competition series next season because a deal could not be reached.

Rumors subsequently started swirling that the two sides had resumed talks in an effort to get Abdul back in the judge's chair.

However, Abdul posted a message on her Twitter page Tuesday night, saying, "With sadness in my heart, I've decided not to re turn."

"She was a pain in the butt to deal with in terms of getting her to show up to different cities on time (for auditions,)" an insider told the Post. "That was a hang-up. And they tried offering less money to just have her appear for the live finals in Los Angeles, but negotiations broke down."
