Living statues to descend on London site

LONDON, May 16 (UPI) -- Artist Antony Gormley says his plan to have 2,400 people serve as living statues in London's Trafalgar Square will address the question of identity.

Gormley said his "One and Other" living art exhibit, which will be presented between July and October, will be meant to have individuals question themselves and their identity, The Times of London reported Saturday.

"What's the difference between what you do and what you are?" Gormley said. "Between doing and being?"

"After a while you begin to feel the strangeness of your own self," added the artist, who has spent time as a living statue.

Each participant will pose as a statue for one hour at a time on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square.

While standing and posing for an hour may sound tedious to some, The Times said nearly 11,000 people have already signed up for a shot at it.
