Brooklyn's Cyclone set to re-open

BROOKLYN, N.Y., March 31 (UPI) -- The Coney Island Cyclone is set to re-open after receiving an off-season facelift, representatives for the famed New York roller coaster's operators said.

The ride is set to open Sunday afternoon with Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, Miss Cyclone, The Hungry March Band and hundreds of guests expected to help kick off the 2009 season, a news release from Thirsty Girl Productions said.

"We launched a new Web site. We have a new look and we are thrilled that the '09 season is about to begin," operator Carol Hill Albert said in a statement Tuesday. "Though Astroland is not opening this year, we know Coney Island will still be the place to be in New York for great summer fun including the Cyclone, the beach and boardwalk (always free to enjoy), great food and lots more."

Albert assured Brooklyn traditions like the Mermaid Parade, the Siren Festival, the Nathan's hot dog eating contest and Friday night fireworks will all take place again this year.

"There is some confusion about what is and is not happening this year in Coney Island," Albert explained. "Our Web site www.ConeyIslandCyclone.com will answer many of those questions and include information on activities, events and area attractions. Astroland may be closed for the season, but Coney Island is still the center of summer fun in the area."
