Actor Sam Bottoms dead at 53

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 19 (UPI) -- U.S. film and television actor Sam Bottoms has died of a brain tumor at his home in Los Angeles, his sister-in-law said. He was 53.

The Santa Barbara, Calif., native had roles in "The Last Picture Show," "Apocalypse Now," "The Outlaw Josey Wales," "Bronco Billy," "Gardens of Stone" and "Seabiscuit." He also appeared in the 1981 television mini-series "East of Eden," as well as numerous shows and commercials, The New York Times said.

He is survived by his brothers Timothy, Joseph and Ben, who are also actors; his parents James and Elizabeth Chapman Bottoms; his second wife, film producer Laura Conde Bickford; and Clara and Io, his two daughters from his first marriage to Susan Arnold, which ended in divorce, The Times said.
