PLANO, Texas, Nov. 9 (UPI) -- One of the stars of "Dallas" says he was surprised thousands of loyal fans gathered in Plano, Texas, to honor the old prime time soap opera's 30th anniversary.

Actor Ken Kerchival, who played Cliff Barnes on the long-running TV show, said he was shocked to see the continued support for "Dallas" more than 15 years after it last aired, The Dallas Morning News reported Sunday.

"I don't understand it," Kerchival said at Saturday's gathering at the Southfork Ranch where the series was once shot. "The staying power. Who knew?"

The anniversary event marked 30 years since the show first aired on CBS in 1978. It ran until 1991.

"Dallas" fan Sudesh Sharma said it was the series and its cast that made its city namesake a household name.

"It's them who made the city of Dallas famous around the world," Sharma told the Morning News of the show's cast, many of whom were in attendance.
