'Hair' heading back to Broadway

NEW YORK, Aug. 23 (UPI) -- A producer says she has begun negotiations with New York theaters to determine where she will release the newest Broadway rendition of the musical "Hair."

Producer Elizabeth I. McCann said she had contacted several Broadway theaters regarding her planned reopening of the rock musical with the help of The Public Theater, which has been presenting the counter-culture classic this summer, the New York Post reported Friday.

Yet McCann has not confirmed if she obtained the rights for the popular musical from the theater group, which put "Hair" renditions on in Central Park.

The Post said the likely reopening of the musical at a major Broadway theater should be possible now that a rendition of "Godspell," another musical based on the hippie culture of the 1960s, collapsed last week.

The newspaper said the end of the production should offer increased attendance possibilities for "Hair" wherever the musical ultimately calls home.
