NEW YORK, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- Surgeons in New York say thin celebrities like British actress Keira Knightley are inspiring women to have liposuction on their shoulders.
Plastic surgeon Dr. Douglas Steinbrech said several of his patients from Britain seeking the surgical procedure tell him they want to have the shoulders of such slender stars as Knightley or pop singer Madonna, The (Britain) Daily Mail said Friday.
"Many of my patients are now requesting shoulders like Madonna and Keira Knightley," the New York surgeon said.
But Steinbrech warned potential patients seeking the shoulder liposuction, which can cost up to $10,000, that the procedure is typically for those with a similar thin physique.
'This procedure is for people who are usually already in great shape and are very trim," he told the Mail.
Meanwhile, a British plastic surgeon has criticized British residents who idolize such waif-like celebrities to such extremes.
"I think in this country we are moving away from women having to be stick-thin. A woman who looks normal and healthy is much better," Chelsea and Westminster Hospital consultant Barbara Jemec said.
