Doo-wop Duprees name battle goes on

TRENTON, N.J., Aug. 3 (UPI) -- A federal judge in New Jersey has given more time for dueling sides to submit arguments in their battle over rights to the name used by a 1960s doo-wop group.

The estate of Michael Arnone, an original member of The Duprees, is suing a singing group that allegedly is using the trademark name without permission.

The (Newark, N.J.) Star-Ledger reported Sunday the lawsuit contends the current Duprees are violating the trademark on the name Arnone obtained before he died in 2005.

The singers in the current Duprees group contend Arnone granted them permission to use the name and that he had been their manager until his death.

The Duprees, the newspaper said, scored a hit with "You Belong to Me" in the early 1960s.

No new hearing dates have been scheduled in the case.
