NEW YORK, June 29 (UPI) -- Aerosmith is going to challenge its fans' musical abilities with the upcoming video game "Guitar Hero Aerosmith," members of the U.S. rock band say.

Singer Steven Tyler said helping to create the video game brought back a flood of memories thanks to the its format that chronologically follows the band's history, The New York Times reported Sunday.

"There have been a ton of different games that have been guitar driven, but none quite like this," Tyler said. "It's like watching your yearbook in a DVD form. You see the girl that you took to the prom, and you go, 'Oh my God, look at what I look like.'"

For Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry, the "Guitar Hero" series proved unusually daunting given the nearly 30 years he has been rocking songs such as "Back in the Saddle" and "Dream On."

"Not being able to play it past the first level was a very humbling realization," he told the Times.

The newspaper said the Aerosmith rendition of the popular game series, in which players mimic guitar licks with a special controller, was being released Sunday.
