'Crystal Skull' peeks interest

LONDON, April 19 (UPI) -- Interest in clear quartz skulls like the one featured in "Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull" has been spurred by the new Hollywood movie, experts say.

A spokesman for the British Museum said the upcoming release of the fourth "Indiana Jones" film has sparked new interest among anthropologists and historians regarding theories of the artifacts, The Daily Telegraph reported Saturday.

Crystal skulls were initially thought to have been pre-Columbian artifacts, but researchers have since determined they were more likely created during the 19th century.

A spokesman at the British Museum, which has housed one of the crystal skulls since 1897, warns the story line of the action-packed adventure movie will likely not be historically accurate either.

"As entertainment, the movie will surely appeal to the public, but it is very much a work of fiction," he said. "We hope, however, that it will encourage visitors to see the skull at the British Museum and to learn more about Aztec culture."
