NEW YORK, April 10 (UPI) -- Cellist Yo-Yo Ma is to perform with the Sony Philharmonic Orchestra at a charity event at New York's Carnegie Hall this fall, Sony announced.
The orchestra -- made up of Sony employees from Japan as well as their family members -- will be led by Maestro Daniel Harding of the London Symphony Orchestra.
The Oct. 14 event marks the first time the 108-piece Sony Orchestra will perform in the United States.
Yo-Yo Ma will be featured as a guest soloist at the concert, and a portion of the event's proceeds will be donated to The Harlem School of the Arts, Midori & Friends and the Orchestra of St. Luke's Arts Education Program in support of arts education, Sony said.
"Bringing the Sony Orchestra to New York to perform on the main stage at Carnegie Hall has been a 10-year dream of mine," Howard Stringer, chairman and chief executive officer of Sony Corp., said in a statement. "Their passion for music mirrors their passion for engineering excellence. And their commitment to both reflects the talents and the energies of Sony employees around the world. When I first heard them play, I was struck by the high level of performance they were able to achieve as an amateur orchestra."
