Stars turn out for Minghella memorial

LONDON, April 7 (UPI) -- Film stars Jude Law, Renee Zellweger and Helena Bonham-Carter were among those who attended a memorial service for filmmaker Anthony Minghella in London.

The Oscar-winning writer-director died last month from complications following cancer surgery.

Minghella, whose movies include "Cold Mountain," "The English Patient," "Truly, Madly, Deeply" and "The Talented Mr. Ripley," was 54.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, whom Minghella directed in a Labor Party broadcast before the 2005 General Election, and his wife Sarah, as well as former Prime Minister Tony Blair and his wife Cherie, also attended the service, which followed a private family funeral at the Thomas More Catholic Church, near Minghella's home in Hampstead, North London Saturday, the Sunday Mirror reported.

John Hurt, Jill Scott and Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, also turned out to pay their respects to the late Oscar-winning filmmaker.

"He was a sweet, warm, bright and funny man who was interested in everything from football to opera and, most of all, his family," the Mirror quoted Law as saying.
