Developers target Mitchell property

ATLANTA, March 15 (UPI) -- Two developers are bidding for a section of the Atlanta property previously owned by Margaret Mitchell, author of the famed novel "Gone with the Wind."

After contemplating the competing development bids, the trustees of the author's property voted 17-8 in favor of selling the land at some point, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Saturday. That date could ultimately be March 31, the date of board's next meeting.

Minutes from the group's last meeting indicate the Atlanta Historical Society had initially asked for development proposals two years ago and most of the land sale would go toward an endowment.

"The Jamestown offer includes payment of $7 million in cash," the minutes said of one of the offers. "Of that $7 million, $5 million would go to the endowment of the Margaret Mitchell House & Museum and $2 million would seed a capital campaign."

The capital campaign would be designated for construction of a new visitors center.
