Art work has animal-rights folks howling

ROTTERDAM, Netherlands, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- An artist who reportedly killed her cat and made a purse out of it and fed baby chicks through a paper shredder has sparked fresh outrage in the Netherlands.

Katinka Simonse, who is known professionally as Tinkerbell, contributed a dead dog that can be turned inside out to be a dead cat for display at The Art Rotterdam International Art Fair, Radio Netherlands reported Thursday.

The piece, which the artist dubbed "Popple," has angered animal-rights advocates and inspired the political party representing animal rights in the Dutch parliament to seek the prohibition of using creatures in "extreme art," the report said.

Simonse said she made her latest shocking creation to get a dialogue going regarding how people treat animals.

She also said it was meant to be a protest against the quest to create ideal animals through breeding and genetic manipulation.

Organizers of the art fair told Radio Netherlands they don't plan to yank the work.
