'Cry-Baby' stage musical to weep on B'way

NEW YORK, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- A new stage musical based on John Waters' 1990 film "Cry-Baby" is to begin performances on Broadway later this year, Playbill.com reported.

The New York run follows the show's fall 2007 world premiere at the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego.

Starting March 15, "Cry-Baby" will take over the stage at the Marquis Theatre, which was the recent home of "The Drowsy Chaperone."

James Snyder and Harriet Harris will reprise the roles they created at the La Jolla Playhouse in the Broadway production. Snyder will play the title character, while Harris is expected to again portray Mrs. Vernon-Williams, Playbill.com said.

Set in 1950s Baltimore, "Cry-Baby" is about what happens when "the baddest boy in town" falls for a good girl.

The show is scheduled to officially open April 24.

Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan -- who wrote the libretto for "Hairspray," another musical based on a Waters movie -- provide the book for the stage version of "Cry-Baby," which features songs by David Javerbaum and Adam Schlesinger.
