Wrecked jet-powered car for sale on eBay

LONDON, Dec. 24 (UPI) -- The car in which "Top Gear" host Richard Hammond almost died in Britain has been put up for bid on an online auction site.

Hammond was hospitalized five weeks after the jet-powered dragster Vampire crashed at the Elvington airfield near York. Although the rocket car was wrecked, it is being marketed on eBay with a starting price of $5,000, The Times of London reported Monday.

"Vampire is now a little the worse for wear after its much-publicized excursion into the weeds. It is being sold as scrap without any warranty or guarantees," its description reads.

Colin Fallows, who jointly owns the car through Primetime Land Speed Engineering with Mark Newby, said they already turned aside many souvenir-hunters making large bids for parts of the car.

"Everybody who's approached us so far has wanted pieces of it and we've been offered huge sums of money for the steering wheel," he told The Times.

Fallows said they prefer to sell the vehicle in one piece, such as it is, because "then it's out of our way. I'm not particularly fussed where it goes but it would be nice to keep it complete."
