'Into the Wild' wins top Gotham Award

NEW YORK, Nov. 28 (UPI) -- Director Sean Penn's adventure film "Into the Wild" won the prize for best feature at the 17th Gotham Awards ceremony in New York.

Based on the true story of Christopher McCandless, the movie is about a young college graduate, played by Emile Hirsch, who hitchhikes to Alaska to live in the wilderness and escape the trappings of the 20th Century.

Also Tuesday night, the Independent Feature Project bestowed its award for best documentary on Michael's Moore's U.S. health-care expose "Sicko," while the ensemble cast honor was shared by the stars of "Talk to Me" and "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead," Variety.com reported.

Ellen Page won the prize for breakthrough actor for her work in "Juno" and Craig Zobel earned the equivalent in the directing category for his film "Great World of Sound."

"Frownland" was named the Best Film Not Playing at a Theater Near You.
