Pitt drops out of 'State of Play'

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 21 (UPI) -- Brad Pitt has decided not to star in the upcoming U.S. big screen version of the British miniseries, "State of Play," Variety.com reported.

"Brad Pitt has left the Universal Pictures production of 'State of Play.' We remain committed to this project and to the filmmakers, cast members, crew and others who are also involved in making the movie. We reserve all rights in this matter," said a statement issued by Universal.

Pitt's decision to leave the project came after two weeks of discussions with director Kevin Macdonald, the trade paper said.

The movie -- about a police detective who works with journalists to try to solve the death of politician's mistress -- is also set to star Edward Norton, Helen Mirren, Rachel McAdams, Jason Bateman and Robin Wright Penn. It had been slated to start filming Nov. 15.

The studio must quickly try to find a star to replace Pitt and begin production soon or risk losing other actors who might be forced to drop out due to projects they scheduled after "Play."
