Munchkins get star on Walk of Fame

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 21 (UPI) -- The actors who played Munchkins in the iconic 1939 film, "The Wizard of Oz," have been honored with a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame.

Only seven of the original 124 Munchkins are still alive, but they all turned out for Tuesday's presentation.

Hundreds of fans gathered to watch Mickey Carroll, Ruth Duccini, Jerry Maren, Margaret Pellegrini, Meinhardt Raabe, Karl Slover and Clarence Swensen as they pulled up in front of Grauman's Chinese Theatre in a white horse-drawn carriage and made their way down a yellow-brick carpet, The Los Angeles Times reported.

"I don't know what I would have done if I hadn't been in 'The Wizard of Oz,'" said Swensen. "It was a great teacher."

After their experience in "Oz," most of the Munchkin actors fell out of touch with each other.

"We didn't start getting together again until 1985. That's when they started having the events all over the country and inviting us," said Pellegrini.

"It's taken a long time (to get a star on the Walk of Fame)," said Maren. "We have a lot of fans. I can understand that now."
