Rudyard Kipling's son focus of new drama

LONDON, Nov. 4 (UPI) -- War historians believe the alleged burial place in England of famed author Rudyard Kipling's son is incorrectly identified.

The Observer on Sunday reported war historians Tonie and Valmaie Holt believe the tomb officially recognized as Lt. John Kipling's grave site is likely to contain the body of Lt. Arthur Jacob of the London Irish regiment.

Rudyard Kipling lobbied for his son's conscription after medical examiners deemed him unfit for duty. John Kipling went missing in the Battle of Loos in 1915, six weeks after entering the service, the Observer recounted.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission inscribed a tomb of a former unknown soldier with the words "Lieutenant John Kipling, Irish Guards" following an examination of war records.

The Holts' examination found discrepancies in map locations and other accounts suggesting the tomb is not the resting place of Lt. Kipling.

"We would like a proper analysis of the evidence we've uncovered so far," Tonie Holt is quoted in the Observer.

The story of Rudyard Kipling's plight to secure his son's commission is the premise of "My Boy Jack," a new drama on England's ITV1.

The drama features stars Kim Cattrall of "Sex and the City," Harry Potter himself, Daniel Radcliffe, and David Haig, who also wrote the screenplay.
