Copperfield sued over canceled Asian tour

LOS ANGELES , Oct. 25 (UPI) -- U.S. illusionist David Copperfield is being sued for canceling engagements in Southeast Asia, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

The 51-year-old magician was to perform in Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore in the coming weeks but canceled on Sunday.

Promoters at Viva Art International Limited and MAZ Concerts Inc. have filed a civil lawsuit in the Superior Court of Los Angeles County for breach of contract, the newspaper said.

Viva and MAZ have demanded the return of several million dollars paid into an escrow account for Copperfield's performances in Southeast Asia.

Copperfield has reportedly refused to return any of the money.

Although Copperfield canceled the shows after learning the FBI was investigating a Seattle woman's claim he raped her in the Bahamas, Copperfield's lawyer, David Chesnoff, previously stated the dates were canceled because the Asian promoters defaulted on their contracts not because of the investigation.
