Copperfield cancels tour dates

LAS VEGAS, Oct. 23 (UPI) -- U.S. illusionist David Copperfield has canceled a series of performance dates in Southeast Asia, E! Online reported.

The move comes amid reports the FBI has searched Copperfield's Las Vegas warehouse following a Seattle woman's allegation the magician sexually assaulted her in the Bahamas, an allegation Copperfield's camp vehemently denies.

Thai promoter RSI Dream Entertainment told E! Copperfield's management e-mailed them Sunday that all dates would be indefinitely postponed.

Copperfield also canceled shows in Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia.

Ariannna Teoh, director of Arianna Event Management, the Kuala Lumpur-based promoter that booked Copperfield for two shows in the Malaysian capital said the performer opted to stay near home to "help in the investigations."

"Copperfield is not prevented from leaving the United States, but he needs time to get to the bottom of things," Teoh is quoted as saying in the Star newspaper.

Meanwhile, an Indonesian promoter said he hopes Copperfield will reschedule the shows or compensate organizers for marketing expenses.

Copperfield lawyer David Chesnoff said the dates were canceled because the Asian promoters defaulted on their contracts, not because of the investigation.
