Watts, Campbell eye 'The Birds' remake

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 19 (UPI) -- British actress Naomi Watts is set to star in a remake of the 1963 Alfred Hitchcock classic "The Birds," reported Friday.

"Casino Royale" director Martin Campbell is in negotiations to direct the new take on Daphne du Maurier's short story, which inspired the Hitchcock film.

Universal doesn't plan to rush the movie into production prior to a possible writers' strike, the trade paper said.

Campbell's upcoming projects include the action movie "Unstoppable" and the crime thriller "36." Watts will next be seen in "Funny Games."

She is filming "The International" and will follow that up with the screen adaptation of Amy Sutherland's "Kicked, Bitten and Scratched: Life and Lessons at the World's Premiere School for Exotic Animal Trainers."
