Wilde, the Bard, Gallagher top Brit wits

LONDON, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- Playwrights William Shakespeare and Oscar Wilde are on a list of great British wits that also includes rocker Liam Gallagher.

Wilde came in at No. 1 on the list generated through a poll of 3,000 comedy fans, The Telegraph has reported.

The poll was conducted to mark the launch of a new UKTV digital television channel called Dave.

No. 2 on the list was comedian Spike Milligan, who had engraved on his tombstone, the parting shot, "I told you I was ill."

Stephen Fry, a comedian and actor who played Wilde on film, came in at No. 3, followed by "Top Gear" host Jeremy Clarkson at No. 4, and former Prime Minister Winston Churchill at No. 5.

Rounding out the top 10 are Paul Merton at No. 6, Noel Coward at No. 7, Shakespeare at No. 8, Brian Clough at No. 9 and Gallagher at No. 10.

Gallagher is the lead singer for the rock band Oasis.

Known for his irascible demeanor, Gallagher was once quoted as saying about his brother, Noel, "I'd do time for him. I love him. Me and him are cool. If anyone stepped on his toes, I'd cut them off."
