Millionth Russian domain name registered

MOSCOW, Sept. 18 (UPI) -- The Russian Internet has registered its 1 millionth ".ru" domain name.

A company called Cyberbox Ltd. registered "Hanti.ru" just after 1 a.m. Monday, bringing the tally to the 1 million mark, said Andrei Vorobyov, a spokesman for Ru-Center, the non-profit organization overseeing the registration.

"They put in a lot of requests," Vorobyov said, according to the Moscow Times. "Evidently, they very much wanted to get the millionth domain name."

Little is known about Cyberbox, but Vorobyov said it appears to be a company that buys up domain names to use for advertising purposes.

Souvenir coins and T-shirts are being distributed to celebrate the milestone, which reflects the growth of the section of the Internet known as RuNet.

There are 11.1 million domain names ending with .de for Germany; 6.2 million with .uk for the United Kingdom and 6.15 million with .cn for China, Ru-Center said.

The .ru suffix is the eighth-most popular national Internet suffix, coming in just ahead of .ca for Canada, which has about 900,000 domain names, and behind .us for the United States, which has about 1.3 million.

The actual number of U.S. Web sites is much larger, however, since most end with .com.
