NEW YORK, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- Broadway officials are concerned about "Young Frankenstein" producers' decision not to publicly disclose sales figures for their New York production.
While nearly every Broadway production openly reveals its weekly box office sales, "Frankenstein" producers Robert F.X. Sillerman and Mel Brooks have decided to keep their show's sales figures under wraps for the time being, Daily Variety reported Friday.
Many theater officials have criticized the move. But Disney Theatrical Productions Chief Financial Officer David Schrader recognized how keeping such figures secret could potentially aid a production.
"Reporting weekly results at least maintains some form of honesty and objectivity, and we get some legit ink every week," he said. "But sometimes it can be tempting to focus too closely on details that can obscure a more important trajectory or trend for a given show."
Daily Variety said such secretive business dealings are reminiscent of London's West End theater district, where rumors rather than actual numbers are used to gauge a production's success.
