Fancy dress stolen from Carol Channing

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- A thief apparently didn't know he was getting Tony Award-winning actress Carol Channing's $150,000 dress when he snatched her luggage at a Los Angeles hotel.

Police said the unidentified perpetrator stole a piece of luggage from the 86-year-old Broadway actress and singer at the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel this week, Inside that luggage was a sleeveless, silver dress worth $150,000, the Los Angeles Times said Saturday.

A hotel bellhop had placed the Academy Award-nominated actress' luggage on a cart Thursday and then left her belongings unattended.

Police said a hotel security camera showed a man enter the hotel's lobby, approach the cart and take the piece of luggage along with its valuable contents.

The Times said Channing had intended to donate the expensive dress, which was adorned with crystals and rhinestones, to Washington's Smithsonian Institution.
