NEW YORK, Sept. 7 (UPI) -- Hollywood actor Paul Giamatti said he didn't do a lot of physical training for his new role as villain in the action film "Shoot 'Em Up."
"I wanted to look paunchy and out-of-shape," Giamatti told reporters in New York recently. "I wanted to look like a guy who you don't expect him to be doing what he's doing. I had to learn how to shoot the guns but that was basically it -- point, shoot."
Giamatti said he understood from the beginning that the tone of the funny, violent movie, as well as his own character, would be more than a little exaggerated.
"It seemed like it on the page anyway and then when I talked to the director, it seemed like the idea was that (my character) was sort of over-the-top,” he noted. "The whole thing seemed like it was supposed to be over-the-top and tongue-in-cheek. ... That’s why it seemed like it would be fun. (Michael Davis) didn’t have to push me. I was definitely prepared to go over-the-top. He probably had to pull me back a bunch of times."
