NEW YORK, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- Hollywood actress and comedian Whoopi Goldberg kicked off the 11th season of the female-powered ABC talk show, "The View," Tuesday.

The actress, who has won Oscar, Tony, Grammy and Emmy awards, began her first day as moderator of the show with a standing ovation and a welcome message from New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg read by "View" creator and co-host Barbara Walters.

Goldberg takes the place of Rosie O'Donnell at "The View's" table.

Sitting beside her on a newly designed set were Walters and long-time co-hosts Joy Behar and 7-month-pregnant Elisabeth Hasselbeck.

Danny DeVito was the first guest of the season.

He made headlines last winter when he appeared inebriated on "The View" after a night of boozing with his pal George Clooney.

Asked by Walters if he was drunk during his previous appearance, DeVito said, "I was tired," then talked about how he stayed up all night at home after he and Clooney had been out drinking.
