Springsteen's wife releases new solo album

NEW YORK, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- New Jersey singer Patti Scialfa says releasing a new album a month before her husband, Bruce Springsteen, is "challenging."

Springsteen is, in fact, part of the band that plays on "Plays It As It Lays," Scialfa's third solo album. She says he actively campaigned to have her album come out prior to his "Magic," which drops Sept. 25.

"We knew we were coming close together, and he wanted me to be able to put out mine before his," Scialfa said. "I guess we thought at this point it doesn't really matter much. When I was younger I would probably want more room to myself, but at this point it doesn't matter."

Scialfa and Springsteen were married in 1991 -- his second, her first. They have three children: Evan James, 17; Jessica Rae, 15, and Samuel Ryan, 13.

Scialfa is also part of Springsteen's E Street Band and will join him on the road for a tour that begins Oct. 2 in Hartford, Conn.
