Dallas musician shot and killed

DALLAS, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- Dallas musician Jeffrey Carter Albrecht was fatally shot in the head by a neighbor who reportedly mistook him for a burglar, The Dallas Morning News said.

The 34-year-old guitarist and keyboardist, who played with the Dallas rock band, Sorta, as well as with Edie Brickell and New Bohemians, was killed early Monday after an alleged alcohol-fueled altercation with his live-in girlfriend, the newspaper said.

Police said he allegedly punched the woman in the face and back, then tried to kick in a neighbor’s door after she locked him out of their home.

The unidentified neighbor yelled at Albrecht to stop but when he didn’t, the homeowner "shot one time at the top of the door" with a handgun, the police report said.

"He was trying to shoot over his head to scare him away," however, Albrecht, who was about 6-foot-5-inches tall, was hit in the head, Sgt. Larry Lewis, a homicide supervisor, told the Morning News.

Albrecht was declared dead at the scene.

Investigators said a grand jury will determine whether any charges will be filed.
