NEW YORK, Aug. 7 (UPI) -- New York actress Anne Hathaway says she is looking for variety in roles now that her "Princess Diaries" days are behind her.
"One of my prerequisites for doing a movie is that it has to be on the opposite side of the coin from the last thing I did," Hathaway told United Press International in New York recently.
Best-known for headlining two "Princess Diaries" movies and "Ella Enchanted," Hathaway has more recently starred in "Brokeback Mountain" and "The Devil Wears Prada."
She will follow up her new period movie, "Becoming Jane," with the contemporary secret agent comedy, "Get Smart."
"I spent a lot of time in the early part of my career staying within the same realm with a lot of my film choices," Hathaway explained. "I don’t regret that, considering that my first movie was ... a very popular film. So, all of a sudden, I had opportunities, I had attention, I had buzz and heat and all those things that people tell you you are supposed to work for and I didn’t know if I could act."
After several years of honing her craft, Hathaway said she is now enjoying branching off into different characters.
