LOS ANGELES, June 18 (UPI) -- CBS Radio sound effects man Ray Erlenborn, who worked on "Blondie," has died in West Hills, Calif., of a bacterial infection at age 92.
Erlenborn often boasted about the skills he used working on "Blondie," the Los Angeles Times reported Monday.
"I could do the whole sequence myself," Erlenborn told the Atlantic Monthly in 2000. "You can choreograph it so it works: Start running from off-mic, then do a whiz whistle for Dagwood flying through the door, then the dog starts barking, then you do a tom-tom for the two bodies hitting together, then I would actually drop a big handful of mail right by the mic.
"You just have to make sure you keep all the props where you can grab 'em."
Erlenborn on such shows as "Suspense," "Big Town" and "Amos 'n' Andy."
Leonard Maltin, who interviewed Erlenborn in 1997 for "The Great American Broadcast," said he was "not just a technician"
"... Good sound effects men were artists and performers," Maltin said.
He is survived by his wife Meredith, son Dan, daughters Diana McArdle and Valerie Phimister, 20 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
