POWYS, Wales, May 27 (UPI) -- A writer at Wales' Hay-on-Wye literary festival this weekend is ruffling feathers with his new adaptations of Jane Austen's male characters.
Screenwriter Andrew Davies, whose latest project is an adaptation of Austen's "Sense and Sensibility," says her male characters were thinly sketched, The Times of London reported.
"Austen never really had men in her books on their own, or men without women," Davies said. I don't think she really understood them. She didn't draw out her male characters enough."
Davies, who also produced adaptations of Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" and Charles Dickens' "Bleak House," said he plans to toughen up the male characters a bit for his new work. But, the Times reported, Davies' peers have warned him Austen enthusiasts can be fiercely protective of her work.
