Brooke Shields supports Mother's Act

WASHINGTON, May 13 (UPI) -- Actress Brooke Shields is using her star power to help push Congress to pass the "Mother's Act" in Washington.

The act would help new mothers suffering from postpartum depression by providing them with education, screening, treatment and research on the subject, ABC's "This Week" news program reported Sunday.

"We are taught that being a mother and becoming a mother is the most glorious thing you could ever do. It's the most natural thing," Shields said. "If you don't do this beautifully, then you are wrong. You know, you're not a good mother. You're not a good woman."

She then told about how she suffered from postpartum depression after the birth of her first daughter.

"I was not really aware that I had it. It was devastating to my whole family," she said.

She also said knowledge of postpartum is a tool she believes women deserve to have and the bill would be an "easy gift to give to women everywhere."
