Ex-porn star wins settlement in Japan

TOKYO, April 14 (UPI) -- Ex-Japanese porn star Kaoru Kuroki has won 1.7 million yen, about $14,000, in a Tokyo court case involving infringement of privacy by gossip magazines.

The former adult film actress was originally seeking 22 million yen, about $185,000, in the case against Tokyo-based Shogakukan Inc. after two of its weekly magazines reported on her private life after she had retired, Mainichi Daily News reported Saturday.

"The sensational articles that revealed the private life of the plaintiff, who now lives as an ordinary citizen, are illegal," said Judge Izumi Takizawa as he handed down the ruling.

Kuroki, who retired in 1994 and now lives as an "ordinary citizen" should have been asked for her approval before the articles were published, said Wataru Akiyama, her attorney.

"It can't be said all stories of this kind are illegal, but the publisher should have gained her consent," Akiyama added.

Shogakukan is considering appealing to a higher court.

"It's regrettable that our claim was dismissed," the company said. "We'll consider how to respond to the ruling after closely reviewing it."
