WILLARD, Utah, April 11 (UPI) -- A Utah man who claims to have inherited more than $150 million from the late Howard Hughes reportedly is going to pursue his case.
Lawyers for Melvin Dummar, 61, of Willard, Utah, filed motions in a Nevada district court, hoping for a new trial, the Salt Lake Tribune reported Wednesday. A federal judge earlier this year dismissed a lawsuit that sought the $156 million Dummar said he was promised by Hughes' will.
Dummar wants the most recent judgment overturned so he can pursue a new trial in Utah's U.S. District Court, the newspaper said. Sources said court documents contain information that Dummar's legal team said it believes is sufficient to warrant a new trial.
Dummar claimed for more than 30 years that he rescued a bloodied Hughes in the Nevada desert in 1967. After Hughes died in 1976, Dummar said a man delivered a will to his gas station with instructions that it be given to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
The will left Dummar and the church 1/16th of Hughes' estate -- or approximately $156 million each.
Dummar's previous attempts to collect the money failed, with the courts calling the "Mormon will" a fake.
