Celebrity tennis instructor Carl Earn dies

LOS ANGELES, April 12 (UPI) -- Carl Earn, a tennis pro who taught stars such as Charlton Heston and Dinah Shore, died in his Los Angeles-area home of natural causes at the age of 86.

Earn, who died April 4, won many Los Angeles-area tournaments, was a leftie known for his topspin forehand, the Los Angeles Times said.

Earn turned professional in 1946, a year after he was discharged from the Navy, and joined a the Professional Players Association tour assembled by Bill Tilden. Earn finished that year ranked No. 7 behind such other greats as Bobby Riggs, Don Budge and Fred Perry.

Earn also was the head pro at Beverly Hills' Hillcrest Country Club for 25 years and at the Beverly Hills Tennis Club for another five.

He founded the 16-court Tennis Place in 1976.

Earn is survived by a sister and brother, a nephew and two nieces.
