Floating museum to undergo makeover

BAYONNE, N.J., April 10 (UPI) -- The floating military museum U.S.S. Intrepid is scheduled to be dry-docked in New Jersey for sprucing up and repair work on the 64-year-old aircraft carrier.

The Intrepid's move to the dry dock adjacent to the cruise-ship mooring in Bayonne, N.J., where it is expected to remain for about two months, is the first time the 41,000-ton ship has been out of water in 30 years, according to Bill White, president of the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum.

The exterior work is only part what White called the "extreme makeover" of the museum, The New York Times said Tuesday.

From Bayonne, the ship is scheduled to be towed to New York's Staten Island, where its interior will be renovated and new exhibits installed. Meanwhile, museum officials said, construction will take place at the Intrepid's home at Pier 86 on Manhattan's West Side.
