HANOI, Vietnam, April 8 (UPI) -- British pop star Gary Glitter is trying to get a second reduction for his three-year child molestation jail sentence in Vietnam.
Glitter, born Paul Francis Gadd, was convicted in March 2006 of sexually abusing two 10 and 11-year-old Vietnamese girls and sentenced to three years in prison, the BBC reported Sunday.
His term already has been cut by three months under a national amnesty in February, moving his release date to August 2008. Now, Glitter's lawyer, Le Thanh Kinh, said the pop star plans to request another six month reduction on April 30, which is Liberation Day.
"My client will certainly submit a letter asking for another six-month reduction of his prison term once the Vietnamese authorities announce the plan for amnesty on Liberation Day," said Kinh.
Glitter has been in prison since November 2005 and under Vietnamese law, he has to serve at least half of his sentenced term, meaning he could possibly be out this May.
Once he is released, Glitter will be deported to Britain or any nation that will take him.
