CHICAGO, April 3 (UPI) -- Chicago Sun-Times film critic Roger Ebert, on the mend from complications from cancer surgery, has marked his 40th anniversary with the newspaper.
In a letter to his readers Monday, Ebert noted that since his surgery for salivary-gland cancer nine months ago he has undergone other medical procedures that left him debilitated and with a tracheostomy that silenced his voice temporarily. He is regaining his strength through therapy and faces another operation on his throat.
Still, he said, "I am feeling better every day and my wife, Chaz, says we can see the light at the end of the tunnel."
He said he enjoys checking out guest reviewers brought in to team with his TV partner, Richard Roeper, that he will be in the audience at his Overlooked Film Festival April 25-29 and has another book being published this month titled "Your Movie Sucks, Reviews of Movies I Hated."
Ebert said it was important for him to continue writing movie reviews and fulfilling other duties "during this difficult period" and he plans to increase his role at the newspaper in the coming months.
"I still love writing about the movies," he said. "Forty years is not enough."
