Cruise commits to WWII film

HOLLYWOOD, March 21 (UPI) -- Tom Cruise has signed up to star in a Hollywood thriller about the real-history plot by German generals to assassinate Adolf Hitler during World War II.

Cruise apparently was drawn to the project not only by the script but because Bryan Singer has been given the nod as director, Variety said Wednesday. Singer will produce the movie with Chris McQuarrie, who wrote the script with Nathan Alexander, who also will be co-producer.

"After reading the script, Tom and I knew immediately that this was a film we had to make," said Paula Wagner, who is Cruise's partner in C/W Productions. "As an added bonus, because of Bryan Singer's involvement and Tom's admiration for him as a filmmaker, as well as the excellence of the script, the project attracted Tom as an actor."

The movie will be the second Cruise and Wagner have committed to making with United Artists. The first is "Lions For Lambs" starring Cruise, Robert Redford and Meryl Streep that will be out Nov. 9.
