Broadway actress Ellen Hanley dies

NORWALK, Conn., Feb. 15 (UPI) -- Ellen Hanley, a Broadway actress in the 1940s, '50s and '60s, died of a stroke in Norwalk, Conn., at the age of 80.

Hanley was best known for her portrayal of the wife of New York Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia in the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical "Fiorello!" that ran for nearly 800 performances beginning in 1959, Playbill said.

She made her Broadway debut as Mary in "Annie Get Your Gun" in 1946. She won a Theatre World Award the next year for her performance in "Barefoot Boy With Cheek."

Hanley, who died Tuesday, is survived by a daughter and a son.
