Williams' new album reflects her life

NEW YORK, Feb. 4 (UPI) -- Like many U.S. country singers, Lucinda Williams says she used her own life in the songs that adorn her newest studio album, "West."

Williams told the New York Daily News her newest musical offering, which hits stores Feb. 13, is filled with songs that represent her impressions about her life.

"Art is about self-expression," the 54-year-old said. "My songs reflect where I am in my life. It's like writing a journal. I have to do it. Otherwise I'll die."

While Williams has made a successful career crooning about heartache and loss on albums like 1998's "Car Wheels on A Gravel Road," she said that her newest album has a more optimistic attitude.

"It has taken me a while to learn not to make the same mistakes over and over," said Williams, who credits her age and maturity for the change. "I'm older now than I was when I did 'Car Wheels (on A Gravel Road).'"

The newspaper said that included on the album are songs about the death of Williams' mother and, on a more positive note, the presence of a man she referred to as the love of her life.
