"The Departed" is a remake of the popular Hong Kong crime thriller Infernal Affairs, originally made in 2002.

British author P.D. James provided fodder for "The Children of Men," a novel set on 2021 and centers on the results of mass infertility.

"Little Children" is based on a novel by Tom Perrotta, about an upper-middle class Boston suburb, focusing on the affair of two characters.

The 2003 novel "Notes on a Scandal" was the basis for the Oscar nominee of the same name. The novel by Zoe Heller is about a female teacher at a London school who has an affair with an underage student.

Nominees in the original screenplay category are "Babel," "Letters from Iwo Jima," "Little Miss Sunshine," "Pan's Labyrinth" and "The Queen."
