Cavern Club celebrates golden anniversary

LIVERPOOL, England, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- The Cavern Club, the Liverpool venue credited with launching The Beatles, will mark its 50th anniversary with a 13-hour party.

Kicking off the marathon will be the Merseysippi jazz band, which performed on the club's opening night, the BBC reported.

In addition, the invitation-only party will feature "more contemporary bands to reflect the history of the club over the years," said Cavern Club spokesman Dave Jones. "It is a celebration of the club as a live music venue from the 1950s through to today."

The club was demolished in 1973, but reopened 10 years later on part of the same site and using bricks from the original building. A piece of art showing the sight of the doorway to the original club will be unveiled as part of the festivities.
