Hollywood set to embrace 'exploitation'

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- Three U.S. filmmakers in their 30s and 40s have embraced the "exploitation" films they grew up with by making a trio of new Hollywood movies.

Directors Robert Rodriquez, Joe Carnahan and Craig Brewer all like the outrageous films they watched during the 1960s and '70s and have created three new movies based around the "exploitation" model, the Los Angeles Times said.

Rodriguez, who previously created such outrageous films as "From Dusk Till Dawn," is set to release "Grindhouse" along with co-director Quentin Tarantino as a double feature within one film.

While Rodriguez created a zombie action section entitled "Planet Terror," his "Pulp Fiction" co-director headed up the road rage film "Death Proof" that equally embraces the zany film genre, the Times said.

Meanwhile, Carnahan will release his film "Smokin' Aces" on Jan. 26 and hopes its over-the-top action nature appeases fans of the historic "exploitation" films.

The paper said Brewer will wrap up the trio with his follow-up to "Hustle & Flow," "Black Snake Moan," that heavily draws from "blaxploitation" films like "Shaft."
